On Wednesdays, we wear pink. And on weekends, we enjoy vegan afternoon tea. Yes, you can finally sit down for a vegan-friendly “Mean Girls” afternoon tea, just like you have always wanted.
Written by comedian Tina Fey, 2004’s “Mean Girls” is the much-loved tale of Cady Heron’s journey from Africa to the wild clique system of American high school. Fifteen years on, it remains a treasured part of pop culture for many. October 3rd (if you know, you know) has even been declared “Mean Girls” day.
If you want to pay homage to the noughties classic in the best way possible (through food), you CAN sit with your friends at Duo London Cocktail Bar in Camden and enjoy a “Mean Girls”-themed afternoon tea — the offering is aptly named “That’s So Fetch.”
Whilst the tea isn’t completely vegan, the bar serves vegan Red Pepper, Aubergine, and Pesto sandwiches. Dairy-free cakes can be ordered in advance.
“Our afternoon tea consists of a birdcage of Instagrammable desserts with your favorite ‘Mean Girls’ quotes and a selection of tasty sandwiches,” says Duo London on its website. “All the Gretchens and Regina Georges of London can pout their fabulous lips on our candyfloss cocktails.” If you’re after the cocktail option, ask ahead if any can be made vegan.
“Play over your ‘Mean Girls’-themed movie moments and devour all sorts of flowers and teddy bears to put a smile on your face,” it continues. “If you’ve had a pretty awful week, you’ll be able to vent all your frustrations in a specially made Burn Book.”
London’s Vegan Afternoon Teas
“Mean Girls” just isn’t fetch enough for you? There are plenty of other vegan afternoon teas on offer in London.
The OXO Tower — located on South Bank — offers a vegan cream tea package. The website says, “why can’t we indulge in our favorites while sticking to a plant-based diet? That was the challenge we set for our chefs and they delivered.”
If you’re more of a Mad Hatter than a Plastic, visit The Sanderson Hotel in Fitzrovia. It offers an “Alice in Wonderland”-themed vegan afternoon tea. If it’s Roald Dahl who has your heart, try the vegan “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” afternoon tea package at One Aldwych in Convent Garden.
The “That’s So Fetch” afternoon tea is £40 a ticket and takes place at Duo London on weekends.
