Benedict Cumberbatch Wore the Most Vegan Suit Ever at the Met Gala

Benedict Cumberbatch brought cruelty-free fashion to the Met Gala this year, wearing the most vegan suit ever to the event.

The 42-year-old actor, known for roles in “Sherlock” and “Doctor Strange,” recently attended the 2019 Met Gala, an annual fundraising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City.

The event is star-studded to say the least, with most A-listers making an appearance and wearing everything from ballgowns to vegan burger costumes (we’re looking at you, Katy Perry). Some attendees received criticism for wearing animal materials like feathers while others went for cruelty-free looks, like vegan actors Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth who rocked vegan leather shoes.

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Vegan Suit

According to the Daily Mail, when Cumberbatch and his wife, director Sophie Hunter, arrived at the Met they “eclipsed some of the biggest names in fashion,” thanks to Cumberbatch’s eye-catching, all-vegan ensemble.

Cumberbatch’s stylist of ten years, Joe Woolfe, worked for weeks on the design. “We spent ages talking about it and planning it for about three weeks before he flew to the U.S,” he told the publication.

“He’s vegan, so that meant there were a lot of fabrics we couldn’t use. We ended up using an amazing English bamboo fabric from Huddersfield Fine Worsteds,” Woolfe revealed.

Cumberbatch keeps a low profile online (and by that we mean, he has no profiles), but fans were eager to share images of his ensemble on their own pages.

As well as the bamboo suit, the actor sported a cruelty-free white silk shirt. Typically, silk is produced by boiling silkworms in their cocoons, meaning the fabric is not vegan. Speaking about the silk Cumberbatch wore, Woolfe said, “It was silk, but peace silk, which doesn’t involve killing the worms, so it’s fully vegan and cruelty-free.

“I had to get a few for him to choose from, because I know what he’s like, and if I just give him one thing he’ll feel like he’s being cornered. But he always ends up choosing what I offered first!” he said.

Cumberbatch accessorised the look with a cane, a Lock & Co panama hat, Jaeger-LeCoultre watch, and Stubbs & Wootton slippers, made with “the highest-grade sea island cotton velvet.”

Benedict Cumberbatch and Veganism

It’s reported that Cumberbatch has eschewed animal products since at least 2017, when he and Hunter went to a restaurant and informed waitstaff that he was vegan. Last year, animal rights organization PETA crowned Cumberbatch and filmmaker Ava DuVernay as the “Most Beautiful Vegan Celebs.”
