Dairy Queen Locations Forced to Close Due to Bankruptcy

Share

Owner of 70 Dairy Queen locations, Vasari, LLC, has recently filed for bankruptcy, which has led to the announcement that 30 Dairy Queen restaurants are closing.

The franchise, which began operations nearly 80 years ago in 1940, serves a range of classic American food, which includes a lot of animal products. According to VegNews, the bankruptcy proceeding for Vasari said ‘While certain of the [Vasari’s] stores are profitable…[Vasari] as a whole is facing net operating losses that cannot continue unabated.’

News of the closures come at a time when vegan and vegetarian businesses are seemingly booming. Amy’s Drive-Thru has recently announced plans to expand nationally, whilst brands such as By Chloe. and Hampton Creek are both looking to go international in the near future. Some vegan eateries are even moving into old fast food chain sites.

Research and surveys seem to suggest that veganism is on the rise both in terms of acceptance from non-vegans and people who are trying a plant-based diet or vegan lifestyle.

Dairy farmers are facing an uncertain future and chains like Dairy Queen are starting to feel the sting of an increased awareness of the impact animal agriculture has on the environment and public health.
