Danish Vegan Meal Delivery Service Simple Feast Raises $12 Million for Expansion

Simple Feast, a Danish meal delivery service, has raised $12 million in a Series A fundraising round to expand its heat-and-serve meal kit business.

The company, founded in 2015, aims to build the “most sustainable meal service on the planet.” Bringing “healthy, delicious dinners” right to consumers’ doors, Simple Feast seeks to make plant-based, meat-free dining as easy and appealing as possible.

The new funding was led by London’s Balderton Capital, with participation from 14W and pre-existing investors ByFounders and Sweet Capital.

According to Tech Crunch, a partner at Balderton Capital, Daniel Waterhouse, commented, “With a global transition towards plant-based food, we believe Simple Feast is uniquely positioned to change the way we eat and create awareness about the impact of our food choices.”

Jakob Jønck, CEO and co-founder of Simple Feast, agreed: “There is no Planet B and we are facing what is arguably the biggest challenge in human history. This is a big investment for a small company, but it’s a drop in the ocean considering the challenge at hand, the politicians and industries we are up against.”

Simple Feast joins a growing number of vegan and plant-based meal kit companies making headlines as consumers shift their dietary preference toward healthier and more sustainable food options. In the U.S., companies including Veestro and Daily Harvest offer vegan and plant-based ready meals that just need to be heated (or thawed).

There’s also Purple Carrot, the meal delivery kit where consumers receive ingredients and recipes that change weekly. It recently expanded its offering and distribution and features a high protein meal track in partnership with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

But not all healthy or vegan meal solutions need to be delivered to your door. In the UK, the nation’s largest supermarket chain, Tesco, launched a vegan ready meal line back in January. The Wicked Kitchen range, formulated by chef brothers Chad and Derek Sarno, features 20 meals from simple sandwiches and wraps to curries and more. Discount supermarket chain Aldi also recently announced it was expanding its line of vegan meats and ready meals to meet the growing consumer demand.
