Vegan Actor Zac Efron Urges 36.5 Million Fans to Help Rescue Farm Animals From Cali Wildfires

Vegan celebrity Zac Efron is urging his 36.5 million Instagram followers to donate to farm animal rescue efforts in the wake of California’s Woolsey and Hill fires.

Taking to his Instagram story, Efron wrote: “Swipe up to help the animals displaced by the Woolsey and Hill Fires. They are taking in domestic animals such as dogs, cats, and birds, as well as livestock.”

The rally for support links to the Humane Society of Venture County (HSVC), which is accepting animals evacuated from both fires. According to the organization’s Instagram page, in addition to providing much-needed refuge for companion animals, it is welcoming donkeys, goats, pigs, chickens, a tortoise, and several horses. HSVC says that it is still in need of volunteers and donations to support its rescue efforts.

“My heart goes out to all those caught in the California Fires,” Efron wrote, directing his fans to donate to the California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Relief Fund.

Efron’s call to action may have to do with his recent lifestyle shift. Back in March, Efron told Teen Vogue he had been “experimenting with eating purely vegan.”

“That’s completely changed the way that my body works, and the way that I metabolize food, the way it turns into energy, the way that I sleep,” Efron told the magazine. “It’s been brilliant. It’s been great for my exercise, and great for my routine.”

Efron said that he changed his diet partly to take better care of his body and to stay healthy for as long as possible. “I think that I want to be able to do what I’m capable of now when I’m 50, 60, 70 years old – like my great-grandfather,” he added.

In addition to eating vegan, Efron also has expressed his love for animals in other ways. In April, he adopted MACA, a pit bull, saving her from euthanasia.

“Tilly now MACA was being led to the kill room when we stepped in and said we would take her. She was turned around and brought to us! This guy named Zac Efron (we hear he is an actor, but we think he actually waits tables) came in and fell in love,” said Barks n’ Bitches, a humane LA pet shop.

“He went through our application process and fostered MACA and just could not give her back,” it continued. “So MACA now lives with Zac! This is her happily ever after! Happy life MACA! Happy life.”
