Vegan Avocado Ice Cream ‘Cado’ Just Hit Whole Foods Shelves Nationwide

Cado, a new vegan avocado-based ice cream, is the latest dairy-free frozen treat to hit Whole Foods. Unlike some other non-dairy ice creams, Cado contains no nuts or soy, making it an allergen-friendly treat that all can enjoy.

“We keep the ingredients list very simple,” co-owner Meghan Dowd told Refinery29. She founded the business in 2015 along with her mother Deb and brother Jack. “We love that when people try Cado, they have no idea it’s made from avocados.”

“Avocados, because of the quality of the fat and creaminess, had found their way into our smoothies and pies, and so using them to craft ice cream was a natural next step,”  said Dowd. “When crafting our first batches of what would become Cado, we had a lightbulb moment. The avocado-base offers more nutrition and a superior fat, doesn’t compete with the flavor, has a really creamy quality, just like ice cream… Everybody should be eating this, we thought! It was a great marriage of two things we loved: ice cream and avocados.”

According to the website, Cado is the first-ever organic, dairy-free avocado-based ice cream made with avocados fresh from the orchard. Every avocado is picked, ripened, cold-processed, pureed, and then blended with flavorful ingredients for a “truly fresh dessert experience.” The brand currently offers flavors in Chocolate, Mint Chocolate Chip, and Lemon Sorbet. Down revealed that in the future, customers can expect to see flavors like Cherry Amaretto, Java Chip, Vanilla, and Salted Caramel.

Additionally, the brand claims that its dairy-free pints are a nutrient-dense dessert that not only tastes delicious but also leaves you feeling nourished. The family-owned business was inspired to start making healthier desserts for everyone, regardless of dietary restrictions.

In recent years, vegan ice cream has been gaining popularity among consumers. A report released by Future Market Insights last November revealed that the plant-based ice cream market is set to reach $2.5 billion within the next decade.
