Vegan Beyond Meat meatball marinara subs are coming to Subway.
Subway, the biggest fast-food chain in North American, is partnering with California-based brand Beyond Meat on its newest meat-free menu option.
The Beyond Meatball Marinara features the Subway-exclusive Beyond Meatball on a toasted six-inch sub, topped with marinara sauce and grated parmesan cheese. To make it vegan, simply order it without the cheese — the marinara sauce and Italian bread are free from animal ingredients. It will be available at 685 restaurants in the U.S. and Canada for a limited time later this year.
“Subway appeals to so many fans because we truly offer something for everyone. Our guests want to feel good about what they eat and they also want to indulge in new flavors,” Len Van Popering, Subway’s Chief Brand and Innovation Officer, said in a statement.
Vegan at Subway
Subway has more than 42,000 locations worldwide, more than half of which are located in the U.S. Its vegan options vary from location to location, with select stores offering plant-based protein options like falafel. The Hearty Italian, Italian, Sourdough, and wraps are vegan and can be filled with any of the veggie options and topped with mustard, fat-free Italian, Buffalo sauce, vinaigrette, oil, vinegar, or sweet onion sauce.
Although the Beyond Meatball Marinara is a limited-edition menu item, Ethan Brown –founder and CEO of Beyond Meat — noted that this marks the start of a “long-term partnership” with Subway.
Subway restaurants in the UK recently launched the Vegan Signature Loaded Wrap, featuring two plant-based patties, guacamole, vegetables, and egg-free aioli on a tomato-basil wrap. The nationwide roll-out followed the successful test run of the vegan patty at select UK locations. Subway Finland also offers an egg-free veggie patty option.
Subway restaurants in Australia and New Zealand launched falafel in July 2018 in response to consumer demand for more vegan options.
“We know Australian palates and preferences have changed over time, and we’re excited to hear directly from our guests so we can end up with a great balance between the classic Subway favorites, and on-trend, innovative flavors,” Subway’s Director of Marketing Kate Brody said at the time.
The vegan-friendly Beyond Meatball Marinara sub will launch in 685 Subway restaurants across the U.S. and Canada for a limited time starting in September.
