Burger King has expanded its vegan menu options, with a new burger at its Malta locations.

The new vegan menu option consists of a veggie bean burger, which is made from kidney beans, vegetables and coated in crispy breadcrumbs. The move follows increasing customer demand for more vegetarian and vegan options.

Ivan Cardona, franchise manager of Burger King, told local news source Lovin Malta, “After receiving requests for a vegetarian product and always having our customers at heart, Burger King Malta launched the Veggie Bean Burger on the 1st of May.

Cardona added “[w]e are very excited to launch the Veggie Bean Burger and to respond to the market by introducing a vegetarian product.

Cardona said of the new Malta vegan menu option, “[w]e strongly believe that Burger King should be a brand that everybody can enjoy, and the launch of this product is key to this.” He added, “the Veggie Bean Burger is not just for vegetarians – it’s an option for anyone wanting an alternative burger.

The burger is served with cheese and mayo, as well as lettuce, tomato, and ketchup. Both the cheese and mayo can be removed upon request to make the burger vegan.

The vegan-friendly Impossible Whopper launched in April.

Many fast food restaurants have been slow to add dedicated vegan options to their menus. However, several are now branching out by partnering with innovative plant-based companies.

Burger King is no exception. It announced its new vegan burger, the Impossible Whopper on April 1st this year. Impossible Foods CEO, Pat Brown described the launch as a “‘meta’ April Fool’s joke.

He explained, “people will get a burger that they will actually believe it’s made from an animal, and be told it’s made from plants, and think it’s an April Fool’s joke and it’s not!

Originally the Impossible Whopper only launched in 59 locations across Mississippi. However, the meat-free option is so popular that the company has plans for a U.S. roll-out across all 7000 locations by the end of the year.

There are also reports it may come to the UK before long.

A Burger King spokesperson told The Caterer, “Following the launch of our meat-free whopper trial in the US, we know there is a huge appetite for alternative options to meat here in the UK. We are currently exploring opportunities to bring a meat-free burger to the UK.”

The Veggie Bean Burger is available at all of the six Burger King outlets. These include Valletta, Paceville, Sliema, the Malta International Airport in Gudja, Qormi, and Mosta.
