Walmart Now Sells Vegan Eggs And We’re So Here For It

Vegan JUST Eggs will soon be available at select locations of Walmart, the largest retailer in the world.

Food technology company JUST makes its eggs out of mung beans and turmeric, not chickens.

The product has proved popular among those seeking a healthier alternative to eggs. The JUST Egg contains no cholesterol or GMO ingredients and offers 5 grams of protein per serving. The breakfast sandwich version of the egg has 20 percent more protein and 65 percent less saturated fat than its animal-based counterpart.

The plant-based egg also caters to those concerned about the environment. The vegan egg  requires 70 percent less surface and groundwater and has a 40 percent smaller carbon footprint than a chicken egg.

“[The JUST Egg] is a good step to creating a more sustainable food system,” JUST co-founder and CEO Josh Tetrick told FOX Business.

Vegan Eggs Taking Over

Speaking to LIVEKINDLY, Tetrick commented, “Growing up in Alabama, we did a lot of our shopping at Walmart, so having JUST Egg in the store where my mom bought our family chicken eggs is a pretty incredible milestone.”

Tetrick says that so far, JUST has sold the equivalent to 10 million eggs. This figure is projected to climb; the food tech company recently announced that its cruelty-free egg is now available at 2,100 Kroger-owned stores, including Kroger, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Ralphs, and QFC. Tetrick said in a statement earlier this month, “We believe a just food system starts with breakfast and our partnership with the Kroger family of stores, the largest grocery store chain in the United States, makes JUST Egg accessible to countless consumers in communities around the country.”

He added that the collaboration is a “major step toward building a smarter, healthier, and more sustainable way of eating.”

Vegan Food at Walmart

Walmart has steadily increased its range of vegan food options. The retailer offers Gardein’s spicy vegan gochujang chicken wings, MorningStar Farms’ Veggie Pulled Pork, and Loma Linda’s plant-based tuna.

Walmart recently restocked its supply of JUST’s egg-free mayonnaise, which had sold out. The retailer will soon add JUST Ranch to its store shelves, too.

JUST’s plant-based egg will soon be available at several hundred Walmart stores in the U.S. Exact locations are yet to be announced but will mostly be in the west of the U.S. to begin.
