11-Year-Old Vegan TEDx Speaker Genesis Butler Launches Non-Profit to Support Animal Sanctuaries

Vegan TEDx speaker and animal rights advocate Genesis Butler has already done more for animals in her eleven years of life than most of us can dream of achieving. Now, the child activist is launching her own nonprofit, Genesis for Animals, to help animal sanctuaries.

Announcing the news via Instagram, Butler wrote, “I’m proud to announce my nonprofit Genesis for Animals is now ready to start helping sanctuaries who save the lives of animals!”

She went on to explain the concept behind her new venture. “I chose the name, Genesis for Animals, because my name means a new beginning and I want to help give animals a new beginning,” she wrote.

The nonprofit will achieve this aim by providing funding to vegan sanctuaries and rescues that permanently home animals. Donations will be contribute to general animal care; covering food and shelter as well as transportation costs and vet visits.

As if setting up the nonprofit itself wasn’t enough, Butler also donated nearly $5,000 of her own money, which she has saved up for years, to the cause. “I felt the money could be best used by sanctuaries who really need funding. I also saved money to pay for all the fees to start my nonprofit because I want to do everything I can to save the lives of animals,” she said. “I am now beginning to raise funds for sanctuaries and shelters throughout the nation.”

She asked her followers to consider donating “any amount.”

The nonprofit adds to the extensive list of inspirational things Butler has achieved. She presented a TEDx talk when she was aged just ten, becoming the youngest ever Ted Talks speaker. Since then, she has spoken at Moby’s Circle V festival; become the first-ever winner of the Carlee and Laurie McGrath Young Hero to Animals award; starred in animal rights documentary “Cesar Chavez: Respect For All;” and created a video with PETA Kids to discuss “The Meanest Animal On Earth” (spoiler: it’s humans).

Her animal rights résumé is so impressive that vegan Saudi Prince Khaled bin Alwaleed called Butler an “inspiration.

Butler now joins a growing number of well-known names supporting animal sanctuaries, including billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson and actor Danny Trejo. Award-winning Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma also announced plans earlier this year to open a rescue animal shelter just outside of Mumbai.
