The second largest public school in the U.S. and the largest in the state of California is trialling a vegan menu within 7 of it’s schools. Running from September 5th to November 18th the 7 pilot schools, including Roosevelt and North Hollywood High Schools, will provide a vegan food option and soy milk to its students. Students can choose from a ‘Range Free’ Burger, Veggie Chilli with tortilla chips, Bean Tamale, Hungry Planet Italian Sausage Sub, Teriyaki Veggie Sandwich.

The Los Angeles Unified School District has over 650,000 students in over 1000 schools throughout California. Their Food Services division is responsible for serving over 138 million meals every year and has ‘Nourishing Children to Achieve Excellence’ as it’s core mission. As such offering healthy vegan options with proven health benefits are a natural progression.

Working closely with local food suppliers the nutrition specialists at the school have spent over a year developing balanced healthy meat alternatives that meet all nutritional requirements and which are low fat and tasty. Expanding on their existing healthy eating programme they will be piloting the vegan menu at 1 school in each of their 7 districts. Trained staff will be on hand a week before the new menu is released to talk to students about the health benefits and offer free tastings to generate interest. Feedback will be gained from students and staff over the next few months in order to improve and ultimately expand the vegan menu to more schools.

School Work

“We are proud of our staff’s knowledge, skills and support as they developed our vegan option menu and the materials to promote it,” Food Services Director Joseph K. Vaughn said. “We are working with vendors to not only ensure products meet nutritional and vegan standards, but that they are also tasty and appealing. We want to stir up interest and excitement so that our students will try a vegan option.”
