Give Your Morning Coffee a Nutrition Boost With These Vegan Creamers

What do you get if you cross the world’s greatest surfer with the most common morning ritual? Laird Superfood’s delicious dairy-free coffee creamers—made with nutritious plants to help boost your energy levels.

Created by American big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton, these coffee creamers use whole, plant-based ingredients to bring more to your mug than typical creamers. By combining Aquamin—a multi-mineral ingredient produced from calcified red algae—with coconut milk powder, organic extra virgin coconut oil, and organic coconut sugar, Hamilton’s range of coffee creamers turns your morning cup of joe into an experience. All while providing simple, functional fuel for your body.

Hamilton is well known for his multidisciplinary surfing skills, intense training regimes, and belief in surfing as an art form. He became a legend in the recorded history of surfing in 2000 when he rode the “Millennium Wave” at Teahupo’o, which at the time was considered the biggest, heaviest wave ever surfed.

Hamilton co-invented tow-in surfing in the mid-1990s, which enabled big wave surfers to break the 30-foot barrier and ride even taller waves. He also helped to popularize stand up paddle boarding and SUP surfing, a modern sport with roots in Hawaii’s traditional surfing.

Hamilton founded Laird Superfood in 2015 with his wife, Gabrielle Reece—an American professional volleyball player, New York Times bestselling author, and health and wellness leader—and Paul Hodge, a motorcyclist, pilot, and all-around adventurer. Reece and Hamilton are also the founders of the performance lifestyle XPT Life (Extreme Performance Training).

All three founders are familiar with the rigors of high-performance training. Hamilton, in particular, has spoken about the importance of functional fats and oils in powering his extremely active lifestyle. Combining vegan creamer with the nutrition of superfoods and coconut oil turns functional fuel into a delicious coffee.

“I’ve always been the sort of person that looks a little deeper at the things I consume on a daily basis. Coffee, for instance, is a morning go-to for so many people, including myself. I wondered how I could improve it,” said Hamilton.

“Growing up surfing and trying to maintain consistent energy was tough and I was in need of a serious boost to keep me energized,” he continued. “I started to add functional fats to my coffee to fuel me throughout the day.”

Butter tea—thought to originate in Tibet—and it’s modern descendant, Bulletproof coffee, combine a fat with caffeine to provide both quick and long-lasting energy. But Hamilton says you can get the same benefit without the dairy.

“It was more of an experiment really, and it proved to be so powerful that I started making cups of my ‘special coffee’ for all of my friends too,” explained Hamilton. “Those friends noticed a positive difference and asked me what I had done to their coffee.”

Whole, Plant-Based Ingredients

Laird Superfood stocks eight different varieties of coffee creamers, including original, unsweetened, turmeric, cacao, vanilla, chocolate mint, and pumpkin spice.

They each combine organic, non-dairy coconut milk powder with coconut oil and the multi-mineral complex Aquamin, which is a source of calcium and magnesium. Aquamin is a natural, marine-sourced multi-mineral ingredient. It is derived from red algae Lithothamnion, which accumulates minerals from the seawater over the course of its life.

Superfood is not a regulated term, but it often refers to foods where the nutrient density outweighs the caloric-load. It usually refers to plants, such as leafy greens, mushrooms, cacao, and turmeric.

Coconut oil is also widely marketed as a superfood and is a source of naturally occurring triglycerides (MCTs) and contains energizing fats.

“I realized that I had tapped into a way to help myself and my friends perform at their best using simple, real ingredients,” said Hamilton. “And that’s how Laird Superfood came to be. For me, it’s about creating essential everyday products that are accessible to everyone. I love the Ohana we’re building and am so grateful for everyone who is a part of it.”

‘I Can’t Imagine My Coffee Without It!’

Laird Superfood creamers have caught on quickly in the health and wellness world. Notable fans include Joe Rogan, Michelle Wie, Joakim Noah, Josh Brolin, and Emily Schuman, the Founder of Cupcakes and Cashmere. Fans of the brand describe the original coffee creamer as creamy, with a touch of sweetness from the coconut sugar.

“I never appreciated or liked milk substitutes before this creamer,” said Schuman. “Adding just a little bit to my coffee every morning makes it feel so indulgent,” she added. “With just the right amount of sweetness. I can’t imagine my coffee without it!”

The company also stocks various innovative hydration solutions, including coconut water and powder mixes. It also sells ground coffee, whole beans, and instant coffee-creamer blends. Laird Superfood’s coffee creamers are available in 8oz and 16oz bags for $9.95 and $16.95, respectively.
