Domino's Pizza Launches Vegan Cheesy Garlic Bread in New Zealand

Domino’s Pizza New Zealand celebrated World Vegetarian Day with a social media announcement sure to please its vegan pizza fans. Following the success of its recent trial of Angel Food brand’s vegan cheese on select pies, the chain is making the vegan pizza range part of the permanent menu across the country known for its love of dairy. It also announced in the same Facebook post the launch of a new menu item: Vegan Cheesy Garlic Bread.

Domino’s New Zealand first announced the vegan pizzas in July, seeing a response similar to other markets where the chain has launched vegan options. Australia’s launch was so successful many of its locations struggled with stock issues for the vegan cheese.

The chain’s announcements mirror that of Domino’s Australia; after trialing several vegan options last year in the world’s third-largest vegan market, the pizza chain made them permanent menu items in January before launching Vegan Cheesy Garlic Bread. Australia has been using cheese from popular American dairy-free cheese brand Follow Your Heart. But New Zealand is keeping things local with the New Zealand-based brand Angel Food.

Domino’s also recently announced plans to launch a “Vegan Supreme” option at select UK locations, marking its first European vegan option outside of the Netherlands and Belgium where it launched three vegan pizzas in April. In the UK, where demand for vegan food seems to outpace all projections, it’s sure to be a successful launch. It has not revealed which brand of dairy-free cheese it will be using in the UK, but there are plenty of options. Several major pizza chains including the nation’s largest, Pizza Express, now offer vegan cheese. Supermarkets are keeping pace, too, offering free-from ranges that include frozen pizza. Asda recently launched vegan pizza options at its hot bar counters.

But vegan pizza isn’t the only plant-based item seeing sales spikes and stock issues. Popular American vegan meat brand Beyond Meat has seen consistent stock issues with its Beyond Burger and Beyond Sausages. After the highly anticipated launch in 900 A&W Canada locations, the burger was quickly back ordered for several weeks, leaving fans like the vegan filmmaker Kevin Smith eagerly awaiting its return.
