Krispy Kreme Vegan Doughnuts Have Finally Arrived

Krispy Kreme is launching vegan doughnuts in the UK.

The popular American doughnut house and coffee shop has more than 130 UK stores. It also has a significant presence in supermarkets, motorway services nationwide, and online.

Krispy Kreme’s Original Glazed Vegan Dozen are the chain’s first plant-based offering. Previously, all of the company’s doughnuts contained milk powder, making them vegetarian but not dairy-free.

According to Krispy Kreme, the new vegan doughnuts have “the same great taste,” as its original 1937 recipe, as well a “light and fluffy” texture and its trademark sugary glaze.

“We are excited to extend our range of iconic irresistibly original doughnuts with the launch of our first-ever vegan offering,” said Louise Direito, Krispy Kreme UK and Ireland’s Head of Innovation, in a statement. “Available exclusively in the UK.”

“We know January is a time that many are trying out new lifestyles and set ourselves the challenge to create a plant-based doughnut that is equally delicious as the original, with absolutely no compromise,” she added.

Vegan Doughnuts in the UK

Krispy Kreme is far from the first company to offer vegan-friendly options in the UK.

British bakery chain Greggs offers plant-based glazed doughnuts year-round, as does Swedish retailer IKEA. Supermarkets including the Co-Op, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Lidl, Marks & Spencer, and Tesco, have all previously sold vegan doughnuts. However, recipes do vary, and each supermarket encourages customers to check either the ingredients or at the bakery counter.

The UK is also home to a wide variety of independent vegan (or vegan-friendly) doughnut shops, including Bath’s Happy Doughnut Co, Brighton’s Glazed Coffee, London’s Crosstown Doughnuts, and Edinburgh’s Considerit.

Earlier this year, Hull-based Revival Coffee and Doughnuts even created a giant vegan doughnut to accompany its other conventionally-sized plant-based pastries and satisfy customer demand.

You can pre-order Krispy Kreme’s Original Glazed Vegan Dozen online from December 21. Krispy Kreme is working with DPD for contact-free deliveries that will take place from January 5 onwards. According to the brand, all its doughnuts are best eaten on the day of delivery.

The Vegan Dozen costs £10.45 per-box plus a variable delivery fee.
