The Massachusetts School of Law (MSLAW) 12th Annual Animal Rights Day is set to take place on Saturday, March 31st, giving the public a full day of animal-related activities, presentations, and demonstrations.
The free public event will kick off in the morning with welcoming remarks from Dean Michael L. Coyne. Events for the day include panels related to animal welfare, a number of family-friendly activities including face painting, crafts, storytelling, and a timely visit from the Easter Bunny.
“We’ve been sponsoring this event for a dozen years now, and it just keeps getting better,” said Diane Sullivan, assistant dean of students and a law professor. “We’re passionate about animals, and about giving back to this community. Animal Rights Day allows us to honor both.”
The book “Please, Can We Keep the Donkey?”, a collection of animal rescue stories written by MSLAW Professors Diane Sullivan and Holly Vietzke, will be on sale at the event. All book proceeds will benefit The Shadow Fund, a non-profit organization established by the school to assist pet parents whose animal companions have medical needs. Other vendors will be present at the event and the 2018 “Humane-Itarian Awards” will take place, honoring local individuals who have fought for animal rights.
Although the event appears to speak primarily about animal rights in regard to pets like cats and dogs, a growing number of people are becoming concerned with the rights of farm animals as well. Earlier this year Canadian animal rights group Animal Justice launched “Paw & Order”, a podcast that discusses the ongoing legal struggles faced by animals in Canada.
