Taco Bell will launch its dedicated vegetarian menu this week — and it features a vegan-friendly Crunchwrap Supreme.
The Mexican-inspired fast-food chain will trial its American Vegetarian Association-certified (AVA) menu in Dallas, Texas. The meat-free Crunchwrap Supreme swaps beef for black beans.
Taco Bell’s dedicated meatless menu will also feature a Vegetarian Quesarito with beans instead of beef and a 7-Layer Burrito. Why Taco Bell is Launching More Vegetarian Options
Taco Bell first announced its intention to launch a dedicated vegetarian menu earlier this year as part of its commitment to serving healthier food.
A growing body of medical studies have linked red meat like beef to an increased risk of a number health conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure, type-2 diabetes, and certain forms of cancer. Many experts agree that eating more plant-based food can lead to better health. It’s for this reason that more Americans say they are eating less meat — usually red or processed meat — according to recent research from John Hopkins Center for a Liveable Future.
In addition to this, Taco Bell has removed the the controversial preservative TBHQ (tertiary butylhydroquinone) from all menu items.
The chain has always been a popular destination for affordable meat-free food — it’s the only quick serve restaurant certified by the AVA. The current menu allows for 8 million vegetarian combinations, according to the brand.
Most menu items can be made vegan with a few tweaks, like swapping meat for beans (black or refried). Remove cheese and sour cream by ordering “fresco style” and replace it with avocado to add creamy texture. There’s even a Taco Bell app, so you can remove or add items to your custom order at will. PS, you can add potatoes to any order — including the Crunchwrap Supreme.
