This Restaurant Serves Spaghetti In Bowls Made Out of Vegan Cheese

UK Italian restaurant Piatto is serving vegan spaghetti in bowls of dairy-free cheese.

Penne, spaghetti, and courgette pasta are available at the Cardiff-based restaurant along with a range of vegan sauces including Norma (slow-cooked cherry tomatoes and fresh aubergine) and Pomodorini (cherry tomatoes with basil, crushed garlic, and virgin olive oil).

Diners have the choice of receiving their meal in a hand-sized vegan cheese basket for £3.50 extra.

Piatto has a range of vegan dishes on its menu, including plant-based lasagne, a kale salad, and a pudding pizza topped with icing and seasonal berries.

The pasta house was founded by restauranteur Giovanni Malacrino, who has more than three decades of experience in the industry and is a believer in the positive experience that dining at a restaurant can be. Piatto asks guests to leave their phones in the table slots provided to properly immerse themselves in the moment.

Malacrino’s son — actor Luca Malacrino of “Coronation Street” and “Grey’s Anatomy” — is also part of the family business. In a statement, Malacrino said, “My favourite food is pasta – if I could eat anything for the rest of my life, it would be a big bowl of my dad’s pasta.”

“A lot of Italian food is vegan, but it’s not always marked as such on the menu, so people can miss out,” he said. “Living in LA, the majority of places to eat are vegan-friendly and options in the UK are getting better all the time.”

“I have a lot of vegan friends back home, and pasta is a staple in their diet. I’m so proud to be able to offer delicious vegan-friendly pasta dishes that are a bit more special, in a really special venue that’s perfect for date nights, in my hometown of Cardiff,” Malacrino said.

Vegan Italian Food

Plant-based Italian food is popular in the UK. Restaurant chain ASK Italian introduced a number of vegan options in October including its Prima Zucca Zucca pizza and Spaghetti Lentil Ragu.

UK-based Italian-American chain Frankie & Benny’s also upped its vegan food options, adding bruschetta and meatless chicken Parmigiana to its menu.
