Tyler Perry Says Meat-Free Burgers Taste ‘Too Good’ to Be Vegan

American actor, filmmaker, comedian, and self-confessed meat-lover Tyler Perry, best known for his portrayal of Mabel “Madea” Simmons, has got the taste for vegan food.

In a video posted on Instagram, Perry was seen sampling a plant-based burger from the popular opening of Slutty Vegan, a vegan food truck in Atlanta that’s just opened its first brick and mortar location.

The star was in disbelief that the meal was free from animal products, jokingly asking Slutty Vegan staff where they got “this beef” from, declaring that they are “lying” that the burger is plant-based.

“This is too good to be vegan. This is really good,” he said before dancing away from the camera.

It’s not the first time Perry has dabbled in veganism; the entertainer even declared he had given up meat in late 2017. On Thanksgiving of the same year, Perry announced that he and his family, including his vegan wife, filmmaker Gelila Bekel, would be enjoying a plant-based Tofurky for the holiday. In an interview with Rachel Ray, Perry said, “we’re in a weird place ‘cause mom is vegan and I just stopped eating meat. But there is something called Tofurkey [sic], tofu turkey, we’re going to try and see if that works out.”

It’s a notable shift given Perry’s previous comments about vegan food. When Steve Harvey introduced Tofurky to the comedian the very same month, Perry joked, “shut up Steve! You’re kidding me?!”

Slutty Vegan’s Celebrity Following

Perry isn’t the only celebrity fan of Slutty Vegan, which sells everything from vegan shrimp to plant-based bacon to dairy-free cheese, complemented by a colorful range of produce.

This week, rapper Snoop Dogg was seen at the food truck tucking into a serving of animal-free fries. Rapper Lil Baby also dropped by, filmed biting into a hearty plant-powered burger. Like Perry, television personality and designer Shereé Whitfield danced as she ate her vegan burger and Tarrus Riley, the “biggest reggae artist,” ate his Slutty Vegan burger on a video for Instagram, saying, “I don’t eat fish, I don’t chicken, no moo, nothing. Plant-based only… Big up to Slutty Vegan.”
