Vegan Avengers Actor Benedict Cumberbatch Tries Local Singapore Plant-Based Cuisine

Vegan actor Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange in the upcoming film “Avengers: Infinity War,” was recently spotted in Singapore. The star revealed he sampled local plant-based food during his travels.

In an interview with Channel News Asia, Cumberbatch revealed how he spent his time in Singapore. The Sherlock Holmes star was able to experience “a little art and culture,” the publication commented. Cumberbatch explained, “I went to the Tooth Relic Buddhist temple.” He also visited the “amazing” ArtScience Museum “in the lotus flower,” referring to the building which is shaped like a flower.

“And that was an extraordinary exhibition,” he added. The interviewer, Genevieve Loh, commended Cumberbatch for going “straight for the culture.”

Cumberbatch noted that he also visited a food hall market. Loh questioned as to whether he had tasted the local cuisine, to which Cumberbatch responded, “Yeah I had local food, as much as a vegan can.”

Late last year, rumours emerged that the British celebrity had gone vegan. According to one social media user, who reportedly served Cumberbatch and his wife at a restaurant, the pair requested plant-based meals. The waiter explained that Sophie Hunter, fellow performer and Cumberbatch’s wife, told the waitstaff, “my husband is vegan.”

Cumberbatch joins the quickly-growing list of high-profile names that have ditched animal products. One notable celeb is performer will.i.am, who recently became vegan and has loudly proclaimed the importance of the lifestyle since his transition. In a social media post, the star wrote: “What I buy and buy into effects not only me but the environment and all living things.”

Following his move to a vegan lifestyle, the musician created the “V-Gang,” something he defines as: “a group of people taking a hardcore gangster approach to wellness and conscious living.”

Farmers have previously voiced their concerns over celebrities endorsing veganism; many credit the rising numbers of those ditching animal products to the celebrities speaking out about the cause.

Zac Efron, Ellie Goulding, Ricky Gervais, Miley Cyrus, James Arthur, Mya, Alicia Silverstone, and now Benedict Cumberbatch, are just some of the names behind the meat-free movement.
