Vegan Chicken Sandwiches Just Launched at This Canadian Chain

Canadian fast-casual chain Press’d Sandwich Shop has added two new vegan chicken sandwiches to the menu.

Served on multigrain bread, the vegan sandwiches—the California Vegan and the Blazing Vegan—feature plant-based meat brand Gardein’s Chick’n.

The California Vegan also features guacamole, vegan cheddar cheese, dairy-free mayo, lettuce, and tomato. The Blazing Vegan includes wing sauce, dairy-free cheddar cheese, vegan mayo, lettuce, and tomato.

According to a press release by Conagra Brands, Gardein’s parent company, the vegan brand is the number one frozen meat alternative brand in Canada.

“A partnership with Press’d Sandwich Shop was a natural choice for Gardein, as we share a similar desire to deliver delicious and quality products that fit a variety of Canadian lifestyles and tastes,” Ian Roberts, Conagra’s VP and general manager said.

Roberts added that Gardein’s wide variety of meat-free products, including chicken, beef, pork, and fish, “allow Canadians to enjoy a huge variety of delicious, plant-based foods.”

Canadians Embrace Vegan Food

Press’d adding vegan options to the menu comes as more Canadians opt for meat-free diets.

According to the National Research Council Canada, more than 40 percent of Canadians have adopted flexitarian eating habits, motivated by health and sustainability concerns.

Experts predict the market for plant-based proteins will grow at 14 percent annually by 2024.

The Canadian government is also accommodating the growing vegan meat market. It recently invested $100 million into the vegan meat industry. This follows an investment of $150 million into the plant-based protein sector in 2018.

Vegan options were a top request of Press’d Sandwich Shop’s customers.

Scott Gordon, the CEO and co-founder of Press’d, said the chain had wanted to enter the vegan market “for some time.”

However, they couldn’t find a meatless product that met the company’s “standard for great taste.”

“After tasting Gardein Chick’n, we were confident we had the right product to build some delicious vegan sandwiches around,” Gordon explained. “So that’s exactly what we did!”
