Giant Vegan Food Factory Opens in New York

Vegan and vegetarian food brand Amy’s Kitchen is opening a new factory in Goshen, New York.

The 389,000-square-foot facility is the brand’s first on the east coast of the U.S. Up until now, it has focused all of its food production efforts on the west coast, where it’s based in California.

Founded in 1987 by Andy and Rachel Berliner, the company offers a wide variety of vegan products including cheesy pepperoni pizza, burritos, wraps, burgers, and soups.

“Amy’s Kitchen has grown beyond the Berliner’s wildest dreams,” the brand says on its website. “Going from several family members pitching in anywhere they can, to a wonderful group of employees, farmers, and suppliers.

“No matter how big the company grows, one thing will always remain the same — the family spirit that permeates every decision inside of Amy’s Kitchen,” it continues.

The family-owned company is aiming to run the new vegan factory — set to open in 2021 — on renewable energy and hopes it will be zero waste and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified.

The brand also hopes the new factory can support the local community, creating around 680 full-time jobs in the area. Outside of the factory grounds, the company aims to support local agriculture, purchasing as many ingredients as possible from farms on the east coast.

“We are delighted to be in Goshen for the long-term and to contribute to the local economy, both through the jobs we provide, as well as by helping further develop the organic farming industry on the east coast of the U.S.,” said Amy’s Kitchen president Xavier Unkovic, in a statement.

The Berliners are also “delighted” by the new location. Andy confirmed that Goshen feels like a “community of likeminded people.”

“We are thrilled to be breaking ground on our new kitchen in a place that truly reflects our values and are grateful for the incredible support of the local community to help us bring this dream to fruition,” he said.
