Vegan Meat Poised to Rival Beef Jerky Market

The meat-free jerky market is soaring, according to one new report from True Industry News.

Jerky, traditionally made from animal products such as beef, can be created from plant-based ingredients including wheat gluten, soy, mushrooms, vegetables, and fruits. Vegan jerky is often high in protein and low in calories, and as True Industry notes, it can be used as “a great type of on the go snack.”

The market drivers and trends for vegan jerky, according to the report, include its health benefits over traditional jerky and its wide appeal to different kinds of consumers, such as celiacs (unless it’s wheat gluten-based). The report also mentions the rise in vegan consumers and states that for those looking for a quick and easy sandwich filling, jerky is a convenient option. It is also high in fiber, vitamins, nutrients, and energy content.

Louisville Vegan Jerky Co, The Herbivorous Butcher, Vegan Dream, and Primal Spirit Food Inc, are just some of the market’s key players. However, new brands and companies are emerging consistently in this category.

In early June, it was reported that female-led, plant-based jerky brand Watermelon Road had placed first at the Nosh Live Contest, a major natural food business conference in New York. The company was awarded both recognition and a $10,000 package prize to continue developing its product. Watermelon Road’s jerky is available across New York and was created out of CEO Jamie Melzer’s desire to feed her family healthy, good quality snacks.

“I wanted to ensure that the snacks I was giving my family were wholesome and nutritious but also fun to eat,” the brand’s website notes. “Watermelon Road was born out of love of wholesome food, fresh flavors, and providing family and friends with better snack options that are as nutritious as they are delicious. Each small batch is prepared by hand, from our family to yours.”

Another vegan jerky launched this year is from Dr. Amy’s Organics. Eggplant-based, the new jerky was created by real doctor Amy Wiesner, who often prescribes a plant-based diet to her patients. Wiesner and her company intend to rival the meat industry with their healthy product. “Eggplant has antioxidants, fiber, and vitamin C, and it is a healthy food that helps you get your digestive system to work properly,” Wiesner explained. “It’s also very filling. With the water taken out, it tends to be very chewy.”
