80-Year-Old Ringo Starr Says Broccoli and Blueberries Keep Him Young

80-Year-Old Vegetarian Drummer Ringo Starr Says Broccoli Keeps Him Young

Beatles drummer Ringo Starr is turning 80. And the rock icon has revealed the secret to “staying young” and maintaining high energy levels is more than just keeping a good beat—it’s also in what you eat.

In an interview with Rolling Stone ahead of his milestone birthday, Starr said: “I am a vegetarian, I have broccoli with everything and blueberries every morning. I just do stuff that I feel is good for me.”

It’s not the first time Starr spoke about his diet. In 2018, he told Rolling Stone his vegetarian diet helps him stay “so young and active.”

The musician spoke about how he keeps up with his busy life, including the launch of his coffee table photo book “Another Day in the Life,” and his tour with the All Starr Band, in celebration of its 30th anniversary.

“You’re a busy man these days,” Rolling Stone interviewer Rob Sheffield said to the icon, asking him how he maintains the lifestyle.

“I think staying active keeps you young,” Starr said, adding that he works out with a trainer. Diet also plays a role; the drummer highlighted that he follows a vegetarian diet.

Beatles Go Meat-Free

In an interview with EFE, Starr revealed he went vegetarian after attending a bullfight in Spain.

Since then, the musician has been admired for his graceful aging. Back in 2016, Starr was said to be an “all-organic vegan,” though it is not clear whether he still sticks to a strictly plant-based diet. In an interview with the Daily Mail, he said that “eating carrots” was how he managed to keep young and healthy.

Starr isn’t the only member of the iconic English rock band to go meat-free. Paul McCartney follows a vegan diet. Last year, he teamed up with his daughters Mary and Stella McCartney, as well as vegan actor Woody Harrelson, to create a short documentary that urges the public to ditch animal products for the good of the environment.

Paul’s late wife and fellow Wings bandmate Linda McCartney wrote and published multiple vegetarian cookbooks. She also founded the plant-based meat brand that shares her name. The vegetarian and vegan Linda McCartney food brand produces a range of meat-free sausages, meatballs, and burger patties.
