There’s a new dairy-free mac ‘n’ cheese line coming to Whole Foods stores and it’s packed with vegan protein.
The new range, which features three new dairy-free cheese options in Southwest, Classic Cheddar, and White Cheddar styles, comes from the Walnut Creek, California-based Modern Table veggie pasta company.
“Vegan food is not only for strict vegans anymore,” Rachel Ercole, Brand Marketing Manager at Modern Table said in a statement. “It’s now spreading to the mainstream and nothing is more broadly appealing than Mac & Cheese!”
According to Ercole, some of the brand’s most loyal customers are “strictly vegan,” she says. The brand also sells dairy-based mac ‘n’ cheese products and plain pasta, and high-protein meal kits.
But many of the brand’s customers think of themselves as flexitarian – looking to eat less meat and dairy. And it’s a growing market, one that Modern Table thinks it’s reaching with the new products. Just like a growing number of consumers are now enjoying both traditional cow’s milk and dairy-free milk options, the burgeoning vegan cheese market is seeing interest from flexitarians as well.

“We worked hard to develop vegan sauces we enjoyed eating ourselves,” said Ercole. “So it’s exciting to finally be able to share these three new Vegan Mac flavors with everyone.”
The three new boxes are a first in the dairy-free mac and cheese market. It’s the first with pasta made from lentils, rice, and peas. The grain and bean combo pasta delivers all nine essential amino acids, according to Modern Table, which is essential for “long-lasting energy, good digestion and improved muscle health.” One serving of the new pasta dishes delivers 16 grams of vegan protein. An average serving of dairy-based mac ‘n’ cheese typically delivers about 13 grams of protein.
Modern Table joins a growing number of brands offering dairy-free macaroni and cheese products. Annie’s Homegrown, Daiya, Road’s End, and Upton’s Naturals all offer shelf-stable boxed mac ‘n’ cheese options.
Modern Table says its mission is to make “everyday foods” that work harder for its consumers by delivering “the power of complete protein.” The new flavors are now available nationally at Whole Foods, Wegmans, Safeway, Amazon, and other supermarket chains.
