9 Reasons Why Walmart Is an Affordable Vegan Shopping Paradise

If you were to hop into a time machine and go back ten years to tell your past self that the Walmart of the future is a haven for vegan food, you probably wouldn’t believe it. But today, plant-based food is so mainstream that the world’s largest retailer has become just that.

From meatless meat and cheese to convenient vegan frozen meals and snacks, Walmart is making plant-based grocery shopping more affordable and accessible to millions across the nation. Availability may vary by store, but the Walmart website makes it easy to figure out what’s in stock at your local store through its search filters – just type in what you’re looking for (like “vegan yogurt”) and then select a location under “Store Availability.”

9 Reasons Why Walmart Is an Affordable Vegan Shopping Paradise

1. Vegan Meat

Walmart is well-stocked when it comes to vegan meat, including crispy tenders and beefless crumbles by Gardein; meatless balls, vegan chicken strips, and Beast Burgers by Beyond Meat; and meatless sausages by Field Roast, plus options from Tofurky, Boca, Sweet Earth, Morningstar Farms, and other brands. The retail giant also carries tofu, tempeh, Sophie’s Kitchen Vegan Toona and jackfruit from Upton’s Naturals and The Jackfruit Company. It even recently started carrying Upton’s seitan.

2. Dairy-Free Milks and Coffee Creamers

Walmart carries a wide variety of vegan dairy, like cashew, coconut, and almond milk by Silk, Almond Breeze, Good Karma flax milk, So Delicious, Milkadamia, Elmhurst, Rice Dream, and Califia Farms. It also stocks a few options for dairy-free coffee creamers.

3. Vegan Convenience Meals

Don’t have time to cook? Walmart has you covered with a plethora of vegan convenience foods, like Amy’s, which offers frozen tamales, curry, enchiladas, burritos, and canned soups. It also carries Annie’s Organics vegan mac and cheese, Sweet Earth veggie pizza, Field Roast dairy-free mac and cheese, Healthy Choice plant-based power bowls, Daiya Cheesy Mac, Alpha Foods vegan pot pies, and Dr. McDougal’s vegan ramen and soups. You can even find gluten-free and accidentally vegan waffles by Van’s.

4. Spreads and Condiments

Vegan butter and egg-free mayo are no longer things reserved for specialty stores. Walmart shoppers have found vegan butter by Earth Balance, dairy-free I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter, Follow Your Heart Veganaise, and just about every spread and sauce sold by JUST.

5. Vegan Cheese and Yogurt

Shoppers have found Field Roast’s Chao Cheese slices, Follow Your Heart Slices, Go Veggie slices (some varieties contain the milk-derived ingredient casein, so be sure to check the label), and Tofutti and Wayfare vegan cream cheese.

For vegan yogurt, keep an eye out for these brands: So Delicious, Good Karma, Silk, and Ruby’s Rockets.

6. Dairy-Free Ice Cream

Vegan ice cream is a welcome treat, no matter what time of year it is. Walmart stocks dairy-free varieties from Ben & Jerry’s, low-calorie Halo Top ice cream, So Delicious, and Breyers. It also carries vegan whipped cream made from coconut or almonds by Reddi-Wip.

7. Savory Snacks

Walmart carries a number of great vegan snacks like potato and tortilla chips (plus salsa and guac for dipping), Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos, veggie and kale chips by Rythm Superfoods, giant soft pretzels, Chex Mix, Pringles, crackers, and more.

For vegan versions of classic snack foods, Walmart has you covered with Hippeas and Earth Balance cheesy puffs and “Cheez-It” style squares. You can even find meatless jerky from Primal Strips, Unisoy, and the Louisville Jerky Company.

8. Sweet Snacks

Sweet tooths will be happy to find vegan cookies like Oreos, Nutter Butter, Lenny & Larry’s, Enjoy Life (plus dairy-free chocolate chips if you want to bake your own), fruit bowls and fruit leather, Lara Bars, freeze-dried fruit, and plenty of vegan-friendly candy like Smarties, Sour Patch Kids, Airheads, Cocomels, Swedish Fish, and Charm’s Blow Pops, to name a few.
