7 Celebrities Who Eat Plants, Love Dogs

celebrities who love dogs

What would life be like without our furry, four-legged friends? After all, our beloved dogs are the reason some of us even survived lockdown. (Am I right, or am I right?) Our devoted pups sat with us through endless Netflix binge-watching, listened with intense rapture (read: napped leisurely) during all of our Zoom work calls, and happily lent a helping mouth as we enjoyed all of our late night Postmates orders. Even those of us without dogs delighted in visits to dog parks to “exercise” (read: gawk at the adorable creatures).

And while they may have experienced lockdown in much (much, much) more luxurious abodes—some of our favorite vegan celebs were accompanied through quarantine by their trusty canines, too. Celebrities: they love dogs just like us!

In honor of National Dog Day—celebrated annually on August 26, but observed by dog lovers every day—we would be remiss not to highlight some of the world’s most famous dogs and the celebrities who love them. From Lewis Hamilton and his adorable bulldog Roscoe to Natalie Portman and her rescue prison dog Sunday (yep, you read that right!), here are seven vegan celebrities and their dogs, which we absolutely cannot get enough of.

Celebrities who love dogs (and eat plants, too!)

Who rescued who? These vegan celebrities can’t get enough of their darling doggos. Here’s to hoping these celebs have rescued and are generously pampering more than just one lucky canine.

Lewis Hamilton and Roscoe

Our favorite vegan, race-car driving, activist heartthrob is head over heels for his bulldog Roscoe. Don’t believe us? Just take a quick glance at his Instagram. Heck, even Roscoe has an IG. And he’s amassed more than 370k followers! “I’m a vegan bulldog that loves to travel, play ball and get attention from all the girls, especially when they rub my bum. I like frisbee and tennis,” his bio reads.

The vegan British racing driver, who won his seventh Formula One championship in 2020, got Roscoe back in 2013. “He’s my new best buddy, I grew up with dogs around me,” Hamilton said at the time. “My mum has five dogs and my dad too. I’ve always wanted dogs and never had the opportunity so I went for it.”

That same year, Hamilton got an English bulldog named Coco. However, she passed away in 2020 after suffering a heart attack, according to reports. Hamilton put Roscoe on a vegan diet for health and ethical reasons soon after, saying they were both “super happy” with the results.

“Since he has gone vegan, his coat is much softer, his paws have healed up, he is no longer limping with pain of arthritis and his breathing has opened up,” Hamilton said.

Moby and Bagel

Award-winning musician Moby went vegan in 1987. Since eschewing meat, dairy, and eggs, he’s become an ardent animal activist—and he’s got the tattoos to prove it. Although a kitten named Tucker may have inspired him to go vegan, Moby tops the list of celebrities who love dogs.

His beloved pooch, Bagel, was rescued from a fairly deplorable situation. She had fleas, ticks, whipworm, roundworm, tapeworm, hookworm, and giardia. Thankfully, she’s in better hands now on loving life in her fur-ever home.

Alicia Silverstone and Pinto Bean

Alicia Silverstone has all the dogs. Seriously. So many we couldn’t keep track! In 2020, the vegan actor took to her blog, The Kind Life, to set the record straight on her dogs’ plant-based diet.

“I saw a lot of discussion in my Instagram comments on a photo of my dog Pinto Bean in front of a plate of carrots, which was just a cute photo opp, not his actual dinner! I started giving my dogs a vegan diet about 20 years ago,” she explained. “I lived with 7 dogs before this new bunch, and they were all huge dogs. I’m talking 50 pounds and bigger, and each of them died around the average age of 16 (it’s very unusual for big dogs to live that long given mainstream diets.)”

She continued: “Not only is it healthy and okay for my dogs to be vegan, (hence the huge vegan dog food market… Google vegan dog food—there are endless brands) but my dogs thrive on it.”

Ruby Rose and Ru

Presumably named after its momma, model Ruby Rose, Ru is just about as cute as they come. During an appearance on the Discovery Channel series “Shark After Dark” the actor explained that shark fin soup initially inspired her to go vegan.

“I used to get something called ‘shark fin soup’ and I didn’t know…,” Rose explained.“I said to my mom, ‘Wait, is this made out of an actual shark’s fin?’ and she was like, ‘Oh no, darling, of course not.’ … I later found out that it was and ended up being so sad that I cried for three weeks.”

Travis Barker and Louis

If Travis Barker’s new line of CBD products for pets is anything to go by, this vegan musician loves his pooch. And his black French bulldog Louis is clearly the star of the range.

“I’ve been using CBD products for years now to help with relaxation, pain management and overall wellness. As a father to a few amazing dogs, I wanted to expand my line to include premium-grade CBD products that would benefit them as well,” Barker said. “The products have really helped them become more calm and have also improved their general health.”

Natalie Portman and Sunday

In 2019, actor and longtime vegan Natalie Portman rescued a fluffy ball of goodness named Sunday from Paws for Life K9 Rescue, a program that pulls dogs from shelters to be trained by inmates in California prisons.

“So grateful to all the people @pawsforlifek9 who trained Sunday, the newest addition to our family! Paws for Life is a prison dog training program for PTSD service dogs and CGC certified adoptable dogs. I saw first-hand how their program is healing for both the trainer and dog,” Portman said.

Katy Perry and Nugget

Our list of celebrities who love dogs wouldn’t be complete without this little golden nugget. Okay, the verdict is still out on whether or not Katy Perry and her little pup, Nugget, have decided to go all the way vegan. Earlier this year, the singer revealed in a Twitter post that the duo were ditching meat. “I’m about 95% ready to be 100% vegan,” she Tweeted. “My dog Nugget has been joining me on this journey for the past 4 months. Pray for us ok.” But either way, the two are too. dang. cute. together.
